High Style On Budget

Find the Perfect High-Low Balance

I was thrilled to be included in the ivillage round up for "How to Get High Style on a Budget."   Who doesn't like to achieve a top notch appearance on a dime?  I've found that it pays to shop around.  Oftentimes, you can find the exact same piece of furniture at a different store for less.  And now, with retailers like Home Goods, decorators are able to achieve a high end look for less

Some of my blogging buddies were also featured in this round up, including Lindsay Dress of Sadie + Stella .  Lindsay has the most killer dining room and has achieved this look using removable wallpaper!   (And would you ever guess those lamps are from Targay).  Lindsay has been gracious enough to feature me on her Featured Room Series before.  She's got ultimate style and so great to be included with her on ivillage.

Try Temporary Wallpaper

Lisa Mende of Lisa Mende Design demonstrates how she uses natural elements in her spaces to create interesting and cost-effective displays.  Lisa has been busy jet setting all over the country!  She recently returned from the ALT Summit in Salt Lake City and is now on her way to Design Camp in Atlanta.  She's a woman to watch as she was also a High Point Market's Style Spotter for October 2012.

 Incorporate Nature

These other ladies don't know me as much as I know them (yes I'm a voyeur into their blogs-ha). But I love them as was honored to be featured with them!

Traci Zeller of Traci Zeller Designs shared her fabulous children's room with us.  She reiterated that it's important to know when to splurge and know when to save.  The fabulous drapes and bedding are the splurge, the artwork and chair are the save.  It all blends wonderfully!

Know When to Save and When to Splurge

Emily Clark of Emily A. Clark blog talks about adding texture with inexpensive bamboo blinds.  You can have a very expensively decorated room and add additional layers to a room with blinds that don't cost an arm and a leg (these are from JC Penny!).  Emily always has great DIY tips.  Recall here when I painted my interior kitchen cabinets to mirror Emily's (sort of).

Dress Your Windows with Bamboo Blinds

Naomi from Design Manifest blog suggests trying an accent wall.  Here she's added Ikea dressers (Rast) and inexpensive accessory items to add contrast against a darkly painted wall.  I have always loved this wall.  I initially spotted it on Pinterest and was a huge fan!  LOVE THE COLOR!

Try an Accent Wall

Jenny Komeda of The Green Notebook  scours the Chelsea Antique's Market (NYC) for artist's artwork on the cheap.  She was able to find this masterpiece for $5!  (I used to LOVE this market on the weekends and miss not being able to frequent it).  Jenny, you lucky dog.  Love that print.

Find Art at Flea Markets

louisa from For Chic Sake decided to create her own etageres from a $40 Ikea bookshelf.  She added some gold paint and mirrors and some beautiful accessories and, voila!  All for under $100!
Say Hello to Spraypaint
Visit here for the entire round up!  Thanks to ivillage for the feature!  They've been so gracious to feature me the last few months.  (Check out the "Pretty Christmas Tree" feature if you missed it")

OKL is back! Trina Turk Today!

Now this is the One Kings Lane I know and love!
Finally a sale on something worthwhile.  Something I can't just buy at Home Goods.

Today, they are featuring Trina Turk pillows at a markedly discounted price.

I felt the rush of adrenaline and excitement return as I saw the sale come across my in box.
The old feelings I shared for my beloved old friend returned.

For some time now, I have been feeling that One Kings Lane isn't as great as it used to be.  But today, it's back with pizazz

In fact, even as I write this, the pillows are flying off the shelves.  I see the dreadful message "in another members cart" and I hit refresh continually waiting for the phantom buyer to either purchase the item or relinquish it so it can go into my cart!

I am already visualizing the black and white cris cross pillow on my sister's Jonathan Adler bed.  She has to have it.  She must have it.  I instant message her and tell her to act now!  Log in.  Heck, use my log in for OKL if you must.  Just purchase that pillow for $35!  You can't loose out

"What, they only have 1 available of each pillow? And someone went and grabbed all of them? Those a$$holes!" My sister cries with despair.
don't give up! The cart will only hold the item for 10 minutes then it takes it out! The person only has 10 minutes to spare!

Now this is why I fell in love with OKL!  To be inspired by hot sales like this!  To create a sense of need!  Of urgency!  Of must have!

refresh refresh refresh!

Now this is what it's all about!!!

..."Oh my gosh, check out the David Hicks Chevron rug," my sister IM's me...NO! Don't loose focus!  Get back over to Trina Turk!

....I'll keep you updated on whether or not we win this fight!

phew, it's been an exhausting morning already!

Massimo Vitali Impostors!

If not Massimo, then where do you go?
I recently became obsessed with buying a Massimo Vitali print for my sunroom.

I've literally been stalking One Kings Lane for their next Massimo Vitali feature and I think too many people are on to this good find.  As a result, OKL hasn't featured a Massimo Vitali sale since last year.  (Update here).  I thought i'd "scored" big when i finally tracked the real Massimo Vitali's down at 1stdibs.com.  I proudly emailed the gallery for pricing on a handful of prints before Christmas thinking this would be the perfect gift!  I received a prompt email back from the gallery and had my Vitali visually hung on my wall before I noticed the price quoted back in the reply email.  "Your requested Massimo Vitali print is sold at our gallery for $38,500.00.  Please let me know if you'd like me to show you additional prints from this artist."

Now I don't mind investing a bit of money into a picture that I love but the most I've ever dabbled in "fine art" has never come close to a house down payment.  So I set off to do a bit of investigation on my own.

1stdibs.com has "real" Massimo Vitali prints for sale RIGHT NOW for $1200-4000 (and up).  Here are a few if you'd like to grab them before the masses:

Also, if you're lucky enough to catch them on a OKL sale, then you could grab a real Massimo Vitali print for about $2000.

If you're like me, I hate to spend the money on something if I know I can find a similar purchase for much less...and almost the same look.  (Now keep in mind, I would not turn away a real Massimo Vitali print if it was given to me someday, but until that day...I have found some good follow up options for much less).  So you can keep the down payment on your house...AND proudly display some art that is Vitali-esque

Here are some pretty good Massimo Vitali Impostors.  I think well worth the money.
