$10 DIY Fire Engine "Sale"

I've been on a DIY kick lately.  Now that the shop is open, I find myself always in search of items I can use for props, displays and staging.  I'm constantly brainstorming about how I can turn items I see in a craft store into a meaningful "something" for the shop.  Even better if I find it on a bargain.

I'm excited to announce that Vivid Hue Home  (775 Farmington Ave, Farmington Connecticut 06032) will be having our very first sale in the very near future... Stay tuned with details.  So when I saw these large circular letters on sale at Hobby Lobby for $2.50 each, I immediately considered how I could use them.    Of course, they were out of the letters I wanted.  But I shuffled through the stack and found these remnants and the wheels started spinning...

For $10 and some $.097 cent crafts paint, I turned these letters into the following:
The u/n became an "s":

(Full disclosure, the "s" was a bit of a stretch and my least favorite of the letter transformations, but it will work for my purpose).
The "O" became an "a"

The 'L" remained untouched.

And the "r" turned into an "e"

Give me an "S", gimme an "A", gimme an "L" and and "E" and what does that spell?  For $10, it spells:

All of the Vivid Hue Homies that are local to Connecticut, keep your eye out for an announcement in September.  We will be putting some killer items on sale to represent the end of summer, beginning of fall and to celebrate our first few months of opening.

I told you I've been from one DIY project to another lately.  We have a local Facebook tagsale group where people can post items they no longer want in their households and the group gets first dibs on grabbing them up.  Recently,  Deb Bibbons of Cobblestones Vintage  posted an adorable bench on the group.

This bench has been in Deb's family for over 25 years.  They used it as extra seating during family gatherings but now it was mostly just taking up space.  I loved it and jumped at the chance to buy it!
In person, this bench was more of a burnt red brick color.  Beautiful, but the color made it a bit more country for my needs.  I decided a DIY project was in order.

I decided to spray paint the bench.  I loved the red and thought about keeping it red but turning it into more of a cherry apple red with bright hues.  But then, a dark navy lacquer would be killer.  And if I wanted to use it in the store in the shop, I could choose a hot pink so it would go with the decor.  Hmmmm...

In the end, I decided to stay with the red theme, just amp it up a bit more.  Say hello to fire engine red...

The difference is very subtle.  In fact, in photos, it's barely visible.  But the new red pops a bit more.  I'm going to use it on the front porch of the shop lined with throw pillows.

I love a good find that I get excited about.

Next week, be on the look out for another exciting venture that Vivid Hue Home will be working on.
In the meantime, check instagram for daily updates.

Also, if you blinked too quickly, then you might have missed my post from yesterday where I give an update on the shop in it's first four months.  Here I go for months at a time with no posts and then hit ya with multiple showings in a week.  I promise to blog here more frequently.

Cheers,
Heather

Meg Finally Gets a Mirror!

Ya'll may recall that I added the Meg Braff wallpaper to my mudroom this summer and I was psyched to spruce it it up!  I'd had my eye on the Meg Braff Up in a Tree wallpaper for some time but I wasn't sure where to put it in my home.  Finally, I settled on the mudroom and was thrilled with the result.

Only...after the paper was added, I have been so nervous to add anything else to the walls because I've wanted to make sure it would be "just right."

I *almost* purchased a navy pagoda mirror from One King's Lane for $500 but never pulled the trigger because it just didn't seem right.

Well today, on a whim, I was shopping around TJ Maxx...I spotted a white mirror for $39.99.   Don't ask me why today...but I decided to buy the $39 mirror and tack holes into the paper!  I've waited long enough.

I may still paint the mirror a lacquered navy but, for now, I'm going to sit with it as white.

What do you think?

Keep it white?  Or paint it navy?

PS--You see the turquoise door in the background?  I'm contemplating painting that a glossy navy too (so mirror and door would all match).  Ah...things are always changing!

But I am very happy to score the mirror for such a great price.

Thoughts and comments welcome!

Any other ideas of what to add to the other walls?  I've been terrified to put any holes into the paper but now that the first ones have been done, it's sort of freeing!

High Style On Budget

Find the Perfect High-Low Balance

I was thrilled to be included in the ivillage round up for "How to Get High Style on a Budget."   Who doesn't like to achieve a top notch appearance on a dime?  I've found that it pays to shop around.  Oftentimes, you can find the exact same piece of furniture at a different store for less.  And now, with retailers like Home Goods, decorators are able to achieve a high end look for less.

Some of my blogging buddies were also featured in this round up, including Lindsay Dress of Sadie + Stella .  Lindsay has the most killer dining room and has achieved this look using removable wallpaper!   (And would you ever guess those lamps are from Targay).  Lindsay has been gracious enough to feature me on her Featured Room Series before.  She's got ultimate style and so great to be included with her on ivillage.

Try Temporary Wallpaper

Lisa Mende of Lisa Mende Design demonstrates how she uses natural elements in her spaces to create interesting and cost-effective displays.  Lisa has been busy jet setting all over the country!  She recently returned from the ALT Summit in Salt Lake City and is now on her way to Design Camp in Atlanta.  She's a woman to watch as she was also a High Point Market's Style Spotter for October 2012.

 Incorporate Nature

These other ladies don't know me as much as I know them (yes I'm a voyeur into their blogs-ha). But I love them as was honored to be featured with them!

Traci Zeller of Traci Zeller Designs shared her fabulous children's room with us.  She reiterated that it's important to know when to splurge and know when to save.  The fabulous drapes and bedding are the splurge, the artwork and chair are the save.  It all blends wonderfully!

Know When to Save and When to Splurge

Emily Clark of Emily A. Clark blog talks about adding texture with inexpensive bamboo blinds.  You can have a very expensively decorated room and add additional layers to a room with blinds that don't cost an arm and a leg (these are from JC Penny!).  Emily always has great DIY tips.  Recall here when I painted my interior kitchen cabinets to mirror Emily's (sort of).

Dress Your Windows with Bamboo Blinds

Naomi from Design Manifest blog suggests trying an accent wall.  Here she's added Ikea dressers (Rast) and inexpensive accessory items to add contrast against a darkly painted wall.  I have always loved this wall.  I initially spotted it on Pinterest and was a huge fan!  LOVE THE COLOR!

Jenny Komeda of The Green Notebook  scours the Chelsea Antique's Market (NYC) for artist's artwork on the cheap.  She was able to find this masterpiece for $5!  (I used to LOVE this market on the weekends and miss not being able to frequent it).  Jenny, you lucky dog.  Love that print.

Find Art at Flea Markets

louisa from For Chic Sake decided to create her own etageres from a $40 Ikea bookshelf.  She added some gold paint and mirrors and some beautiful accessories and, voila!  All for under $100!
Say Hello to Spraypaint
Visit here for the entire round up!  Thanks to ivillage for the feature!  They've been so gracious to feature me the last few months.  (Check out the "Pretty Christmas Tree" feature if you missed it")

Holiday Table Decorations

We hosted this Christmas at our house in Connecticut.  We had my sister, Kurby and her family.  My lil mama and my dad, Dewey.  We had EG's parent's Viv and Pops.  Each time I entertain I try to find a new way to decorate the table.  Usually, I fill the center with fresh flowers.  Hard to go wrong with fresh flowers.  But this year I decided to embrace the spirit of Christmas ornaments.  I didn't have a single fresh flower on the table and instead adorned the table with all ornaments.  I even hung ornaments from the chandelier.  Here's how it turned out:

(Recognize the antlers?)

I made my napkin rings with magnolia leaves and three ornaments tied around the napkins.  I scored the plaid place mats with the gold snowflake accents from Target.  I tried to stay as neutral as possible on the table but couldn't help but throw in a few color accents here and there.

These wonderful poppers have become a Christmas tradition in our family.  Our family 'Tia and Terry" that couldn't be with us, mailed these to us so we could celebrate on Christmas eve.  Each one contains a little gift and a paper crown (to be worn by each member at the dinner!)  Thank you so much Tia and Terry!  xoxoxoxo

I found these little glasses at a yard sale.  The twelve days of Christmas.  They had all twelve of them and I think I paid about three dollars for them.  All twelve of them total.  I loved them so much I would have paid $300 (not really, but you get the point!)  These babies were way under priced and I got a real treasure!

Love my dove salt and pepper shakers in front of the magnolias!

One of the ornaments hanging from the chandelier!

All of the gold ornaments are from Michaels craft stores.  The white containers are from Home Goods (and pulled from my cabinet in the kitchen)

We had such a wonderful and blessed holiday with family.  Half the fun is the prep getting ready for the family.  I could spend forever decorating for the festivities.  Of course, it's great fun entertaining everyone and spending time with family.  It always goes by way too quickly!

How did you all spend your holiday!?  Do you have any special plans for New Year's coming up?

It's been such a wonderful and special year for Vivid Hue Home.  It's hard to believe the year anniversary of this blog is just around the bend!

Hoping you all have a wonderfully healthy and happy holiday!
