ORC Updates to Guest Room

Earlier this year, I made a major update to my guest bedroom.  Ya'll may recall that this was the room I selected to makeover for the Calling It Home One Room Challenge.   And my initial reveal for this room showed a Bohemian Chic meets Hollywood Regency transformation

The room went from a basic gray drab palette to dark navy walls (Sherwin William's SW6510 Loyal Blue) and a turquoise striped ceiling with a sputnik chandelier.  I loved the update, but I could never quite get the DIY turquoise ceiling stripes out of my head.  They were fun and daring but cheaply executed (by me).  I immediately embarked on my next mission of replacing those darned stripes with a more professional finish.  (aka, had to find the wallpaper of my dreams and then convince the husband to pay for the stuff).  Below, I'll take you through the latest transformation with this room.

And voila!  Here's the latest.  I fell in love with Meg Braff's Roxy print.  (I'm a huge Meg Braff fan and have her 'Up In a Tree' Kelly Green paper in my mudroom, here).  The paper definitely gives a much more professionally decorated look to the room.

I also swapped out the previous sear sucker duvet for Trina Turk's Huntington Stripe Duvet

And added a few additional throw pillows for some pop.

A little reminder of Kennebunkport... (See why I love this place so much here).

What are your thoughts about this room?  What do you love?  What do you hate?  Do you think my guests will have a hard time falling to sleep at night?  Any changes you'd make to this room?
I'd love to hear your feedback!

Also, check back soon for an exciting giveaway that I'll be featuring on my site!

Lillian August at Saks NYC

{Pssst...have you heard? }  Lillian August now has a boutique shop at Saks in New York City.    For the city dwellers, check this out:

I have long been a fan of Lillian August for their classic, yet modern design flair.  Think of any high-end designer and Lillian probably offers a segue into the brand.

If you can't make it to the meet and greet this Thursday, here's a glimpse of what you're missing:

Loving the luscious colors and plush textiles; the fuchsia, the teal, the tangerine and charcoal gray.  Saks is selling Lillian August furniture and the unique home accessories for which they've become known.

'Home Goods' Heaven

For those of you that know Vivid Hue Home by now, you know that we are HUGE lovers of One King's Lane.  Ok.  Huge may even be an understatement

There are many of these "exclusive", "by invitation only" online storefronts that have popped up over the last few years (read more here).  But, One King's Lane continues to be my go to.  I've found everything from Trina Turk Pillows, Massimo Vitali Artwork, Designer's Guild Accessories, and unique character accessories for any home
Trina Turk

Now here's where I'll contradict myself.

As enamored as I am with the offerings from OKL, I have also discovered that it pays to know the value of what you're shopping for.   Many of the discount retailers purchase their goods from the same manufacturers.  So what you find on One King's Lane one day, may also appear on the shelves of Marshalls/Home Goods the next.  And they are often the same items.  At different price points.   (And I bet you've already guessed which store is more expensive...ahem...OKL).

Example:
The turquoise table was featured on One King's Lane recently.  It's a World's Away Studly Dresser that retails at $340, on sale at OKL for $149.  Good deal.  (And LOVE the color).

Here's a Moroccan Studly Table (not World's Away and not turquoise) but with the exact same features and brushed nail head details.  I saw this at Home Goods this week for $29.99.

Don't get me wrong, you will probably never find Trina Turk or Designer's Guild at Home Goods.  But some of the accessories with non-descript brands are undoubtedly found there.   Keep your eyes peeled next time you're browsing Home Goods and keep an open mind for what you might find.

Here are the other great things I discovered on my recent trip to Home Goods:

This high backed butterfly settee may seem over the top but I actually contemplated putting it in the corner of one of my guest bedrooms (paired with blue and white sear sucker stripes).  I love the butterfly pattern and can envision this accessorized with contrasting pillows.  (Remember the butterfly mania prediction?)  $499

This side console is very weathered and 'Old Worldly.'  Not the style of my own home, but I recognize a good accessory when I see one.  The same piece could be spotted in an antique shop.  And if you have a passion for Moroccan style decor, this would be an awesome accessory for only $499.

This rug was super stylish in person.  Same Moroccan theme but with great teals, jute and turquoise shades and the quality of the rug itself was a durable loop hole (sometimes the rugs at Home Goods LOOK less expensive).  This 8X10 was $399 and would really make a statement in a room.

I had this long farm-looking basket in my cart and ready to purchase for $59!  I fell in love with the length and the rustic red that looks like it was painted decades ago and then forgotten about in your Grandpa's shed I could envision this on my long kitchen table (see below)...just a subtle accent of red to match the burgundy ottoman in the living room.    Hmmm.  now I'm wondering why I put the thing backExcept, in full disclosure, these feelings of "must have" happen quite frequently and I would become a hoarder if I purchased everything I fell in love with!

This orange lacquer Chinoiserie box had my name on it too.  Wouldn't it be cute on a dresser in a guest bedroom as a pop of color?  Only $14.99

There is nothing better than real flowers in the house.  But I must admit, they make some decent fakes these days and these faux cacti caught my eye because they looked so real.  I would set them outside on my patio table and not have to worry about the heat getting to them all summer long.  And at $11.99, it's worth it not to have to worry about keeping another thing alive (I already have to remember to feed and bathe the kids, yah know! <<sarcasm of course!!!!>>)

And lastly, I hate clutter that is out in the open for guests to view.  So what do I do?  I stick all of my clutter in organization boxes like these.  Sure, the inside looks like the worst kind of junk drawer.  But that's why these beauties come with lids!  Hey, no one should see your dirty laundry.  These started as low as $11.99.  Imagine how perky they'd be in a laundry room, a kids room or even out in the open!

This was a fun trip for me.  And my husband loved it because (for once) I walked away without actually making a single purchase (in this store anyway!)

The lesson learned is not to undermine the possibilities for home decor in your local Marshalls, Home Goods, Target or TJ Maxx.  These stores are getting serious about competing affordably in a 'discount-saavy' market and the quality of their offerings has become very competitive.  Save One King's Lane for your higher-end designer brand purchases!

House Tour: Sun Room

As you know by now, I'm a huge believer in mixing colors and patterns in my style.

I think it adds character and I love when you can expect the unexpected.  When we built our house, my husband EG had his man study included in the plans so he could work at home when needed.  My dream was to have a sun room with windows from wall to wall.  This was to be my study.  It has since become the room we call "the relaxation room."  It's one of the only rooms in our home that doesn't have a TV mounted to the wall.

Welcome to my Sun room Tour

The first decision I made in this room was the rug.  I love Company C and loved the pattern and color choices of this rug.  This set the stage for the rest of the room.

This Anthro chandelier was on sale and I knew I could find a place for it in my home.  I grabbed it before the room was even finished.  I love the circle bulbs over a traditional candle shape because they add a pop of modern to an otherwise shabby chic style.

Sometimes it's hard to "get style right" the first time...initially I had the ceiling painted Benjamin Moore Spectra Blue and the main walls in Benjamin Moore Posey Pink (to match some of the colors in the chandelier).

It looked more like pepto bismol primer paint so we updated with a deeper turquoise blue (thank goodness!).  Now the ceiling and main walls share the same color with slightly different hues

The sofa has a faint pinstripe of mint green and beige.  Subtle but still adds a layer of pattern.

I love love love Trina Turk Home accessories so added these pillows for an extra pop.

I found the Oly Pipa Cocktail table at Layla Grayce.  It reminds me of Christmas Ribbon Candy.  Yummy.

And of course, every coffee table needs Grace Bonney's d*sponge book!  I'm so inspired with what she has been able to turn Design Sponge into.  She had no formal design training and...well I could gush about Design Sponge all day long. Ahhh...some day maybe that will be me.

These chairs are custom Lee Industries by Lillian August.  I'm all about using a contrast welt to add extra definition to a chair.

The bird pillows were spotted by my sister in a cute little homeshop in Kennebunkport

I'm glad she urged me to buy these because now they remind me of our annual summer trip to the beach.
The oblong pillow is Pier 1.  It looks handmade and I love that about it.

The console is Bungalow 5.  I love the details of the nail heads that surround the perimeter.  Remember my post about Foo Dog's? Here are my foo's!

Here's my Vivi
She's a ham
And clearly she believes
in mixing patterns too!

I bought two matching Bungalow 5 side tables for both sides of the couch.  This seems silly but it wasn't until the last few years that I realized it's important to the eye to have symmetry in a room.  Pair off a bed with two side tables or two matching lamps.  Now of course there are ways to play with symmetry so it's not so cookie cutter.  I'll discuss that in future posts.

The fun in decorating is in the details.  Sometimes they're the last to get the attention

Accessories can be a pretty bowl of fresh flowers.  Fun coasters.  Always birds.

Meet our family pet.  I fell in love with him when I spotted him in Home Goods.  My kids are all about dogs.  But we will never have one.  EG is deathly allergic (please don't tell me about the hypo-allergenic dogs...he starts sneezing even when you speak of them).  This is the closest we'll ever get to the real thing.

Accessorizing does not have to be expensive.
I found the lamps with the basket weave lime shades at Home Goods for $25 each.  Steal!

Jonathan Adler, Lonny Mag (RIP), my favs!
(thought Lonny was only an online mag?  well I think I'm the only sucker that paid $30 for one issue because I desperately have to leaf through the pages of a magazine)!

My homage to One Kings Lane.  The signature Elephants.  There was a time when I think I seriously needed a 12 step program to break my habit of buying something from them weekly...(Read more on my thoughts about OKL here)

My little guys
Vivster and Jackers.  These were photos I took and had them put onto canvas as a Father's Day present for EG last year.

Remember my love of Massimo Vitali prints?
Here's where mine will go someday!

Hope you enjoyed the tour.
